In memory of Steve “Skip” Mesquite, HornDrivenRadio.com has three songs that were written or co-written by Skip in its current rotation. The songs are Gone, Sparkling In The Sand both songs were recorded by Tower of Power, including Skips excellent flute work on Sparkling. The last song Mahdi (The Expected One), is a song co-written by Greg Adams and is featured on Greg’s CD Hidden Agenda.
With David Garibaldi’s permission we would like to share what David recently “Twittered” about Skip.
“Hey folks…greets from Detroit. A very busy 3 weeks since my last tweet. Many miles and many things have come and gone. The most significant is the passing of my dear friend, Skip Mesquite. He was one of the most gentle people I’ve ever known. We experienced many things together. He and Mic Gillette brought me into the TOP. It was in the spring of 1970 when we met. He leaves behind a beautiful family and many, many friends…he was loved by all of us. This is tough, and I’m not very good at eulogizing. I will say that Skip was a man who I trusted 100% and was a man of his word. He was a great husband, and father, a supreme friend with a wicked sense of humor. He was a man of unwavering faith who encouraged me in many ways. In all the years we knew each other, I never heard him complain about anything. He was creative, was an excellent musician and band mate he loved baseball and stupid jokes. He was a proud grandfather. He was one of a kind. I loved him and will miss him for a very long time. He and his saxophone are now awaiting the Lord’s return…rest in peace my friend”.

TOP Ten things I learned standing in the Horn spit section at a TOP gig By Al Carlos
10. Wear glasses with little windshield wipers on them.
9. Enough hot air to pass a major Health reform bill.
8. Your face looks like a cricket reflected off of Docs Sax.
7. Learn to read lips on the way home.
6. Your cell phone is fine, it your ears that are not working right.
5. You can tell if the band deli tray included garlic.
4. Horn players hate it when you suck lemons.
3. Blow drying your hair is redundant.
2. Don’t wear a cheap toupee, they can blow it into the balcony.
1. The hardest part of Adolpo and Mic hitting the high notes is watching you dance without laughing.
New song from Tony Adamo
Several months ago, HornDrivenRadio.com was the first station to play Tony Adamo’s new version of the classic Tower of Power song “This Time It’s Real”. Tony has just sent us a remastered version of the song and it is now in our rotation. For “This Time It’s Real” Guitarist/producer Jerry Stucker brought in R&B/Soul -legend drummer, James Gadson (Bill Withers, Herbie Hancock and Quincy Jones),The organist Neil Larson (Gregg Allman, B.B. King, Whitney Houston), and Reggie McBride on bass (Stevie Wonder, Al Jarreau, Keb’Mo’) to record the rhythm tracks on the song. The horn section is made up of current Tower Of Power members Doc Kupka, Tom Politzer, and Mic Gillette.
Tony is back at it again with yet another cover of a Tower of Power staple, “What Is Hip?” This time around the lineup consists of Tony Adamo(vocals) Mike Clark (drums), Bill Summers(percussion), Sandy Griffith (background vocals), Eddie Henderson (trumpet), Richie Goods (bass), Neil Larsen (organ), and Jerry Stucker (guitar). Eddie Henderson in the horn section and Doc Kupka (bari sax) is mo’ funk and groove than anyone can handle. Once again, HornDrivenRadio.com is pleased to announce that we are the first station to have “What Is Hip?” in its rotation.
